Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Collection

The collection consists of 25 8”x10” and 5”x7” black and white photographic prints. The majority of the images illustrate the construction of various subway stations and tunnels throughout the city. A few images show finished stations and the operation of Metro train cars. One image shows a Metrobus.

The materials in this collection consist of newsletters, correspondence, photographs, clippings, programs, and ballots. The materials are bound in two volumes: Volume 2 covering the years 1940-1947 and Volume 3 covering the years 1947-1952. Each year is separated by title sheets and begins with a photograph of the President of the Association.

The collection consists of 31 3.5x5 inch and 30 8x10 inch images of buildings 137 (General Foundry) and 167 (Boiler Makers shop) in the Washington Navy Yard complex. The smaller images are interior and exterior views of buildings and the larger images are reproductions of architectural blueprints.

Scope and Contents The collection consists of 32 3 x 3 inch black and white photographs. There are no negatives with this collection. The images were taken between 1963-1965 and are of houses and businesses throughout Washington, D.C., many of which have been demolished. Historic locations include the Belasco Theater, Edwin Stanton House, John Philip Sousa House, Heurich Mansion, and the Commandant’s House at the USMC Barracks. The collection consists of twenty-seven glass plate negatives and corresponding 8x10 black & white prints, dating from circa 1880-1900. Image subjects include the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, U.S. Capitol, Lafayette Park, Mount Vernon, and the Petersen House. Additionally there are several images of what is believed to be the Potomac River, as well as a number of unidentifiable locations.
